Pastinaca sativa

1820 heirloom variety of this wonderful root vegetable. Plump, sweet and reliable. Flavour is best after frost so we like to sow in early February for winter harvest when roots store well in the ground until needed.

Sow October to February, 1-2cm deep in drills into friable soil, keep moist until germination, thin seedlings to 8cm apart. Fresh seed is vital for germination, replant the best roots in a back corner or the garden where they’ll flower and set seed for future planting - never save seed from bolted plants.
