Oyster Leaf Mertensia maritima

Glorious Northern Hemisphere, coastal plant with oyster-flavoured leaves & pretty blue flowers. Underground rhizomes of dormant plants are also harvested and eaten cooked.

May be challenging to germinate and cultivate.

Germination: Sow seed in flats in seed-raising mix, or in weed-free garden in winter, allow seed to be exposed to cold nights and it should germinate in early spring. Alternatively you can mix seed with damp seed-raising mix or compost and place in sealed container in the fridge and sow in spring.

Grows best in cool, watered, slightly alkaline garden or pots, in sun or part shade. Dormant in winter, can be difficult to overwinter, ensure adequate drainage for the best result.
