Cossack Pineapple Physalis pubescens

A delicious, sweet, aromatic, 1cm ground cherry wrapped in a papery husk.

The plants are a summer annual to about 30cm tall. Fruit falls when ripe and is gathered from under the plants. A straw mulch keeps the fruit clean and dry and makes harvest easier. They store beautifully, sound fruit can sit on the kitchen bench for weeks - that is if no-one eats it! Use fresh, dried, lightly poached or in pies and crumbles, lovely with apples.

Sow seed in October in pots, don’t over water as young plants can be prone to rotting, and plant out in fertile soil in full sun when big enough. May self-seed.
